(FIT2SERVE DAY 2) WHO DO I WORSHIP REALLY?
WHO DO I REALLY WORSHIP?
VERSE: 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.” 7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” 9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” -Jonah 1:4-9
Like we read about yesterday, Jonah heard the word of the Lord and yet instead of obeying it, Jonah disobeyed and ran from God. God then sent a storm to bring Jonah back to Himself and to realign his heart with God’s, but Jonah didn’t even know how bad of a situation he was in. It says he was asleep below deck while the others were fearing for their lives. Sometimes in our lives we can become comfortable or complacent in our sin. Others who love us and care about us may see the depths and the trouble we are in, but often times we may not. Often times we tend to be like Jonah; we think we worship the Lord and yet others can see that we are truly far from Him. As believers we need to remember that our lives are the proof of what it is that we say we actually believe. Here Jonah says he is a Hebrew and worships the Lord and yet in this moment in his life he is actually running from God in utter disobedience to what the Lord has commanded him to do. How often do we do the same thing.
Where in your life are you rationalizing sin and running from the Lord? What areas of your life are you living in utter disobedience to His commands and His Word? Jesus tells his disciples in John 14
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. -John 14:15-17
If Jesus truly is Lord of your life then your life and the fruit of your life will prove that. But God didn’t just leave us on our own. He left us the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us to live holy and righteous before the Lord. Take a moment right now to ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there are any areas of your life that you have not surrendered to the Lord. Then ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there are any areas of your life that you are running from God or walking in disobedience unto Him? Maybe it’s something He told you to do; a relationship He asked you to give up, a step of faith He asked you to take, or even someone He asked you to forgive? Whatever it is today remember, “partial obedience is complete disobedience and disobedience unto the Lord is sin.” If you’re willfully walking in disobedience unto the Lord, know that God loves you and disciplines those He loves. A storm or challenge will come and is meant to bring you back the Father. Repent today. Ask the Lord for forgiveness and do what He has asked you to do. If you don’t you may bring pain, hurt, and destruction upon not only yourself, but on others around you that you love. My prayer for you today is that you choose to repent and surrender whatever it is to the Lord today so that when you say that you worship the Lord, it wil be true.
PRAYER: God, again I humbly come before you today and I open up my heart to You. Holy Spirit, right now show me if there is any area of my life that I’ve yet to surrender to the Lord. Show me if there is any area of my life that I am walking in disobedience or running from the commands and voice of God. (Take a moment to listen-If you are feeling something and you find yourself saying, “God no, not that” there’s a good changes that that is probably the very thing; the very idol you are placing before the Lord.) God I choose today to lay (say whatever it is God is asking you to lay down or let go of) down at You feet, and I surrender it all to You. I trust You that You know what’s best for me and I submit my life to You. Forgive me for placing this before You and for sinning against you. Forgive me for any pain or hurt that I may have caused others. Forgive me for leading others astray because of my unfaithfulness to obey Your voice. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me the strength, the self control and the courage to obey You and surrender my will to Yours so that I might be worthy of bringing Glory to Your Name. In Jesus Name, Amen.
